Belgian Ardennes with children

As soon as you cross the language border and see the rolling hills appear, you feel it: the holiday has begun. For years, the Belgian Ardennes with children has been a favourite destination for families who want to combine nature, adventure and relaxation, without travelling far. If you opt for a glamping holiday, you combine outdoor life with the comfort of a private bathroom and kitchen in your safari tent. Not for nothing is glamping in Belgium becoming increasingly popular with families.

What to do in the Belgian Ardennes with children (Virton region)?

In the Belgian Ardennes with children you need not be bored for a single moment. The Virton region is full of fun and child-friendly outings, which makes the region perfect for a family holiday. This region is a sunny part of Belgium with a unique, warm microclimate: on a summer day it can be 25ยฐC here, while in the rest of the Ardennes it stays around 20-22ยฐC.

1 Visit the Abbey of Orval

An absolute must. Stroll through the impressive ruins of the old abbey and then taste a fresh Orval (preferably one that has matured for a few months) with a piece of local cheese. Orval Abbey is a special place where nature, history and peace come together and is surprisingly fun with children.

2 Exploring at 'Trou des Fees'

In Virton, you will find these magical natural caves in the sandstone cliffs. For children, the Trou des Fees feels like a little adventure from a fairy tale. These natural caves in the sandstone rocks immediately capture the imagination: according to legend, fairies lived here.

3 Hiking in Torgny

This is officially one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia. The houses are built with warm, ochre-coloured stone and red roof tiles, making you immediately feel like you are in France. Combine the visit with an ice cream or lunch on a terrace, making it a real outing rather than "just a stroll". Perfect for a quiet afternoon with the family.

4 Kayaking on the Semois river

For the more active, a descent of the Semois river is a classic. Kayaking on the Semois is one of the most fun activities in the Belgian Ardennes, also with children. The river flows calmly, making it safe and doable for beginners and families.

5 The Montmรฉdy Citadel

Just across the border in France (just a 20-minute drive away!) lies this gigantic fortified town. An impressive piece of history with spectacular views over the surrounding area.

Where to stay with children in the Belgian Ardennes?

A successful holiday starts with a nice place to stay. Especially with children, you want to combine comfort with freedom and child-friendly facilities. Camping La Colline is often the best choice. This attractive family campsite is surrounded by greenery and is fully equipped for families, with a swimming pool (including toddlers' pool), large playground, entertainment and even a petting zoo. Here, children can play safely and make new friends, while parents enjoy peace, space and the beautiful surroundings of the Gaume region.
