Are you planning a glamping holiday in Drenthe and want to know what you really should not miss there? Then this is the place to be. Drenthe may be quiet and green, but make no mistake: there is plenty to do. Although you may be tempted to stay in your safari tent all day, Drenthe has too much fun to pass up. From impressive nature to special history and cosy getaways. These are our personal top five fun outings in Drenthe.
If you're in Drenthe, you really should take a trip to the Dwingelderveld. This is Western Europe's largest wet heathland and it feels endless here. Purple heather in bloom (it's magical here in August), fens, sheep herds and above all: peace and quiet. Perfect for a long morning walk or a bike ride.
Visiting Dwingelderveld with children? Then bring a ball, let the children build huts or go looking for sheep on the heath together. No screens, just enjoy being outdoors. In fine weather, combine a visit to the heath with a picnic.
You can't mention Drenthe without thinking of dolmens. But in Borger, you can really dive in. The Hunebedcentrum shows you how people lived here some 5,000 to 5,500 years ago. It is surprisingly interesting, even if you are not normally keen on history. Outside, you walk past the largest hunebed in the Netherlands. And this is also a suitable outing in less good weather: right next to the hunebed is the museum with interactive exhibitions, films and reconstructed prehistoric houses.
Fancy some more action? Then Wildlands Zoo in Emmen is the perfect destination for an outing in Drenthe. This is not a standard zoo, but more of an experience park. You walk through different continents, take a boat trip and see animals up close. The park is spacious and there are playgrounds and attractions, so children won't get bored for a moment.
💡 Tip: buy tickets online in advance to avoid waiting time at the entrance.
Orvelte is one of those places where you feel like time has stood still. An atmospheric village with old farms, crafts and small shops. You just wander around here, grab a terrace and enjoy the peace and quiet. Ideal for a relaxing afternoon away from your glamping spot.
At Speel- en IJsboerderij De Drentse Koe, there really is plenty for children to do. Outside, they can race on go-karts, slide down the cable car and play endlessly in the sand and water pits. Is the weather not so good? Then the large indoor play barn is the solution, with climbing and sliding towers, a play manege, bouncy castles and much more to expend their energy. On hot days, the water playground is a great success (so bring swimwear!).
After a day full of fun outings, it is great to come back to a nice, child-friendly campsite. Those who choose glamping in the Netherlands will discover how pleasant it is to combine nature and comfort. Holiday Park de Bronzen Emmer in Meppen is a perfect place for that.
You will stay here in a comfortable Villatent. That means luxury camping with fixed beds, a fully equipped kitchen and a nice veranda where you can reminisce about the day together. Everything is there for a relaxing start to your holiday.
On the campsite itself there is plenty for children to do:
